Vibe Coding Rescue: What to Do When Your AI-Built MVP Breaks

You used Cursor, Replit Agent, or Lovable to build your MVP in a weekend. It worked. Investors were impressed. Then real users showed up and everything started breaking. Sound familiar?

The vibe coding hangover is real

Vibe coding — using AI tools to generate an entire application from prompts — has made it possible for non-technical founders to build working software in hours instead of months. That part is genuinely exciting.

The problem comes after. The 20-minute prototype is only about 5% of the actual work required to run a production application. The other 95% — error handling, security, performance, testing, deployment, monitoring — is exactly the stuff that AI-generated code skips.

We see this pattern weekly: a founder has a working demo, shows it to users, gets traction, and then the codebase starts collapsing under real-world usage. Pages load slowly. Data gets corrupted. The same bug keeps coming back. Adding a simple feature takes days instead of minutes.

How to tell if your vibe-coded MVP needs a rescue

Not every AI-built project is broken. Some are fine for their stage. But watch for these signs:

  • You can't explain how it works. If you prompt the AI to “add a feature” and it rewrites half the app to do it, that's a sign the architecture is accidental. Nobody — including the AI — has a mental model of how the pieces fit together.
  • The same bugs keep coming back. AI-generated code tends to fix symptoms rather than root causes. You fix the login bug, and it resurfaces next week because the underlying auth flow is structurally broken.
  • Performance degrades with more users. The app was fast with 10 users. Now it has 500 and everything is slow. AI-generated code often skips indexing, caching, pagination, and connection pooling — the things that make software scale.
  • Security is an afterthought. API keys in the frontend. No input validation. SQL queries built from string concatenation. These are the things that get you on the news.
  • Adding features breaks existing ones. No test coverage means every change is a gamble. The codebase has no safety net and nobody — human or AI — can confidently modify it.

The rescue playbook: stabilize, don't rewrite

The instinct when a codebase is messy is to throw it away and start over. That's almost always the wrong move. A rewrite means months of zero new features while your competitors keep shipping. It means re-introducing bugs that you already fixed. And it means betting that the rewrite will go better than the original — which is far from guaranteed.

Instead, a targeted rescue stabilizes what you have. Here's how it works:

1. Audit what you actually have

Before touching any code, understand the lay of the land. What framework is it using? Where is the data stored? What's the deployment pipeline (if any)? Map the critical user flows and identify where they break.

This takes a senior engineer a few days, not weeks. The goal isn't perfection — it's knowing where the bodies are buried so you can prioritize.

2. Fix security and data integrity first

Before anything else: move secrets out of the client. Add input validation. Fix SQL injection and XSS vulnerabilities. Set up proper authentication. These aren't nice-to-haves — they're non-negotiable if real users are on the platform.

3. Add a deployment pipeline

Vibe-coded projects often ship by running a command from someone's laptop. Set up a proper CI/CD pipeline: automated tests run on every push, deployments are triggered by merging to main, and you can roll back if something breaks. This alone prevents half the fires.

4. Write tests for the critical paths

You don't need 100% test coverage. You need tests for the things that would wake you up at 2am: signup, payment, core data operations. Start with integration tests that cover end-to-end flows. Unit tests can come later.

5. Refactor the hairiest modules

Every codebase has a few files where most of the bugs live. AI-generated code tends to dump everything into long, tangled functions. Identify the worst offenders — the files everyone is afraid to touch — and refactor those. Leave the rest alone. It's working; don't fix what isn't broken.

What a rescue timeline looks like

Every project is different, but here's a rough shape for a typical vibe-coded MVP rescue:

  • Week 1: Audit and triage. You get a written assessment of what's broken and what to fix first.
  • Weeks 2-3: Security fixes, CI/CD setup, critical bug fixes. The app stops catching fire.
  • Weeks 4-6: Refactoring, test coverage, and feature development resume. You're shipping again.

Vibe coding isn't the problem. Stopping at the vibe is.

AI-assisted development is a legitimate way to build software. The tooling will only get better. But the tools generate code, not engineering. The architecture decisions, the security posture, the operational resilience — that still takes a human who's shipped software in production before.
